Dr. Pamela Baxter’s CIHR Grant: Protecting the vulnerable: Healthcare leaders discuss violence in long-term care: January 20th, 2020
Dr. Pam Baxter, associate professor in the McMaster School of Nursing, is the lead on a new grant from CIHR. Dr. Sharon Kaasalainen, also from the School of Nursing, is one of the co-investigators. The grant will fund a national forum to take place this spring.
“We are thrilled that CIHR has funded this national meeting to discuss resident-to-resident aggression in long-term care from a healthcare leader perspective,” says Baxter. “As rates of dementia continue to rise, many older adults living in long-term care homes across our nation are negatively impacted by verbal, physical, sexual and emotional abuse by fellow residents. The consequences of this type of violence can be dire and impact not only the individuals involved, but also their families and staff. There is no one or simple answer to this growing healthcare threat, but we must start the dialogue and move towards developing strategies to protect those most vulnerable to this type of violence. This meeting is just one step on a long and difficult journey towards addressing this pressing issue.”
